Influence of hair straightening on ethyl glucuronide content in hair

چکیده
Aims: The aim of the study was to analyse ETG in hair samples treated by a hair straightener. Methods: Positive EtG hair samples were treated with hair straightener during 1 min at 200°C. Treated and non treated hair were analysed for EtG by GC/MS-NICI after solid phase extraction and heptafluorobutyric anhydride derivatization . Results: In 11 samples an average decrease was found 24% and in 5 cases an average increase was found 14,2%. Conclusion: This preliminary study indicates that a heat source may influence EtG content in hair. This has to be considered for a correct interpretation of EtG results in hair.

2014 consensus for the use of alcohol markers in hair for assessment of both abstinence and chronic excessive alcohol consumption.
1.1 The direct determination of ethanol itself in hair is not possible due to its volatility and its potential absorption from external sources. Instead, the minor ethanol metabolites ethyl glucuronide (EtG) and/or fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs) can be measured in hair as direct markers of alcohol consumption. 1.2 In this consensus FAEEs are defined as: ethyl myristate, ethyl palmitate, ethyl ...

Over the past decade, the use of hair specimens for the long-term detection of the alcohol biomarker ethyl glucuronide has been increasing in popularity and usage. We evaluated the usefulness of fingernail clippings as a suitable alternative to hair for ethyl glucuronide detection. A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for the detection of ethyl glucuronide in fingernail clipp...
متن کاملHair ethyl glucuronide is highly sensitive and specific for detecting moderate-to-heavy drinking in patients with liver disease.
AIMS Hair ethyl glucuronide (EtG) is a promising biomarker of moderate-to-heavy alcohol consumption and may have utility in detecting and monitoring alcohol use in clinical populations where alcohol use is of particular importance. This study evaluated the relationship between hair EtG and drinking in patients with liver disease. METHODS The subjects (n = 200) were patients with liver disease...
متن کاملAbstinence monitoring of suspected drinking drivers: ethyl glucuronide in hair versus CDT.
OBJECTIVE Ethyl glucuronide (EtG) determinations in the hair of self-reported teetotalers were reviewed and compared with carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT) blood tests (by immunochemistry and high-performance liquid chromatography [HPLC]). METHODS A retrospective study was carried out on 154 people whose fitness to drive had to be assessed because of the suspicion of relevant alcohol p...
متن کاملWorkplace alcohol testing program by combined use of ethyl glucuronide and fatty acid ethyl esters in hair.
AIMS The applicability of fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs) and ethyl glucuronide (EtG) in hair in a workplace alcohol testing program was investigated. METHODS A total of 78 hair samples from employees in jobs with a high endangering potential were tested for EtG and FAEEs. In most cases excessive drinking was suspected. For 59 of these cases additional data of the traditional alcohol markers ...
